What Happened
On June 9, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 — its first publicly accessible Mythos-class model, a tier that previously only cyber-defense partners and select biology researchers could access. The public-safe version sits above the Opus family and represents Anthropic's most capable AI model available to general users.
More importantly for budget-conscious users: Claude Fable 5 is included at no extra cost on all paid Claude plans (Pro at $20/mo, Max 5x at $100/mo, Max 20x at $200/mo, Team, and Enterprise) from June 9 through June 22, 2026. After this window closes, continued use will require prepaid usage credits billed at API rates.
Why It Matters
Fable 5's benchmark scores make clear this is a significant leap. It posts 80.3% on SWE-Bench Pro, roughly 11 points ahead of the field (Claude Opus 4.8 at 69.2%, GPT-5.5 at 58.6%, Gemini 3.1 Pro at 54.2%). It also holds the top frontier-model score on Cognition's FrontierCode evaluation.
Anthropic's framing is telling: "The longer and more complex the task, the larger Fable 5's lead over our other models." On quick one-shot questions the difference may be subtle, but on problems that take hours and dozens of steps — large-scale code migrations, multi-day agentic sessions, deep research — the gap becomes dramatic.
Early testers confirm this. Stripe reported completing a 50-million-line Ruby codebase migration in one day, versus over two months for a human team. Lyzr CTO Fabian Hedin noted: "Apps that took a hundred prompts a year ago, it now one-shots."
Pricing Structure
On the API, Fable 5 is priced at $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output tokens, with a 90% prompt-caching discount ($1/M cached reads). That's exactly double Opus 4.8 ($5/$25). For most day-to-day coding, Opus 4.8 remains a better cost-to-quality default; Fable 5 is the model to escalate to for complex, long-horizon work.
API users can access Fable 5 from day one. It's also available on Amazon Bedrock and GitHub Copilot as of June 9.
US-Only Restriction
A notable caveat: following a US government action targeting Mythos-class capabilities under frontier-AI export controls, Fable 5 is restricted to US customers only. The check is account-based (billing address, payment method, phone), not IP-based. Non-US users still have access to Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.5 via Codex CLI, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and other frontier alternatives.
What Subscribers Should Do
If you're on a paid Claude plan, use the window now through June 22 to test Fable 5 on heavy lifting — large codebase migrations, complex refactoring, multi-step research, and agentic workflows. After June 23, the model moves to credits-based access.
